Dear O’Malley Elementary Families,

Last night, the Anchorage School Board voted to approve the transition of O’Malley Elementary to operate solely as an alternative French immersion school beginning with the 2026–27 school year.

I recognize that this decision represents a significant change for many families. O’Malley has been a place of learning, relationships, and community for students and families. Any change affecting a school community naturally brings questions and a range of reactions, and we want to acknowledge that this transition may feel unsettled or uncertain for some.

Beginning next school year, the following changes will take effect:

  • O’Malley Elementary will continue to serve students enrolled in the French immersion program, operating as a focused, alternative program.

  • Neighborhood students currently attending O’Malley Elementary will transition to Huffman Elementary.

  • Middle and high school feeder patterns for the former O’Malley neighborhood school zone will shift to Goldenview Middle School and South High School.

  • Transportation services will no longer be provided for students attending O’Malley for French immersion.

Purpose of the Transition

This transition is intended to align enrollment and programming in a way that strengthens both the French immersion program and the neighborhood school experience for students.

O’Malley currently serves 88 students in its neighborhood attendance area program. While smaller school communities offer meaningful benefits, sustained low enrollment can create challenges related to staffing and classroom configuration. The Board’s action reflects a focus on creating stable, predictable learning environments, while preserving specialized programming.

Supporting Students and Families

Our focus now turns to supporting students and families through a thoughtful and structured transition.

In the coming weeks, district and school leaders will provide detailed information regarding enrollment steps, timelines, and opportunities for students and families to connect with Huffman Elementary. We are committed to ensuring continuity of learning, strong student supports, and a welcoming experience for all transitioning students.

Thank you for your engagement, your partnership, and your continued support of your children and our schools.

With sincerity and respect,

Jharrett Bryantt, Ed.D.

Anchorage School District
